Home

Do you ever think of going home? Now that I am away from my hometown of San Antonio, I often think of what it will be like when I return home. Construction will hopefully be completed on the highways, the new housing developments will be surprising to see, and the people I see will all be different. My mom and dad will be older even though I still picture what they looked like when I was 10, my brother will not be the same guy that I knew when we used to stay up late and play video games, and who knows when I might be able to see my friends. Things will just be different.

Still, home is the place in our hearts where we feel we can go to and all will be okay with the world. When the bills stack up and the job gets stressful it is a bit of relief to remember home. Just think about the way mom used to make your favorite food, and dad used to go outside and play football, why wouldn’t anyone want to be a kid again if even just for a moment?

Why does home hold such a prominent spot in our hearts and minds? Why does it beckon to us to return? I believe that it is because we do have a final home to go to. Heaven is not just a fairy tale that was made up for children’s stories, but rather a place that is more real than the hands I am typing with. It is a place that is home to the King of all and is a place that is made for you and me as well. We are supposed to be there! The only reason we are is because of humanity’s sinful nature. It isn’t because there are trials that we have to endure, or to suffer greatly so we can truly appreciate that great destination. No, on the other hand, God gave us a slice of heaven when he created the Garden of Eden. A place, we can only imagine, that was full of beautiful colors, all kinds of animals, and a place where God proudly walked with his creation. When God created us, we were meant to have a direct relationship with him and not be separated from him. I believe we have this glimpse of the beginning to show us a fraction of what it will be like when we finally go home.

Christ reminds us constantly what his plans are:

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” John 14:1-4

God went to great lengths to ensure that you could have a home to return to. Because you and I have sinned, we weren’t able to get back to where we were supposed to be. However, since Christ suffered our punishment, we can now rest assured that our name will be on the mailbox as long as we accept the gift that is offered. So, when you think of home and think of your past just remember that there is a far better place that is waiting for you. There might just be one of your favorite meals waiting for you when you get there. That might be wishful thinking, but you should know that Jesus is preparing your home as we speak and it is specifically made for you. He loves you and wants you to realize what he has done for you. Just ask for his free gift and he will not only change your life, but he will give you a never-ending place to call home.

Oh, and when you get there please don’t forget to stop by the football field to say hi!

In Christ,
Jon

Your Name - Your Decision

The magnitude of the crucifixion of Jesus has never hit me quite like it has in the last few days. Don’t get me wrong, I know the magnitude of the gift that we have received, but I just didn’t think about it to the fullest. Jesus was arrested the night prior to his execution and that is when his suffering began. People judged him for doing nothing wrong and our punishment was placed on him because he was and still is the only one who lived completely without sin. This has caused me to try to live my life free of sin and live Christ-like. While I still stumble, I know that I am a completely different man than I was or would have been without Christ in my life. Still, I always thought of Jesus dying for everyone at once, and while I knew he died for my sins I didn’t think of him on the cross thinking of me specifically. All that I have done wrong in the eyes of God were in the mind of Jesus when he was on the cross. Imagine Jesus thinking in his head… “Jonathan, you’ve done wrong and now...

Keep Christ in Christmas

I haven't always been a fan of the 'attack on the attack on Christmas' movement over the last few years. Honestly before it was popular, I thought "Happy Holidays" was a great way to express a greeting to someone throughout December. Something, however, has gotten my attention throughout the last few years. Crosses are being removed from public areas, freedom of speech for Christian students and workers has been attacked, secularism of corporate America and the government have grown incredibly, and church attendance has continued to decline. Crime and family depravity are on the rise, horrendous news articles about shootings and child abductions are all too frequent, and even as the most prosperous nation in written history - we have families who are struggling to put food on the table. Society as we know it is in a downward spiral, but must we so quickly and forcefully abandon our faith? I fear for the world that my children will know when they trade in their...

Jimmy Kimmel's Response to Vegas

I found this quote while listening to Jimmy Kimmel’s emotional and controversial response to the Las Vegas shooting through teary eyes: “I want this to be a comedy show, I hate talking about stuff like this. I just want to, you know, laugh about things every night, but that seems to be becoming increasingly difficult lately. It feels like someone has opened a window into Hell…” I don’t agree with Kimmel’s political views on gun control (though I am not an impassioned gun enthusiast either), but I am in full agreement with the emotion behind his speech. I also think he might be on to something when suggesting a window has opened to Hell. Day after day, I think of ways that will convince a dying world of it’s need for the salvation offered in Christ alone. Perhaps, if the world is beginning to recognize that a window has been opened, it is time to be a little more straight forward about who Jesus is. It is a little ironic that we refer to Hell as a place where evil comes f...
