Wow…

What a time we have had these last few weeks, huh? It has been full of celebrity deaths. Michael Jackson, of course, headlined the news over all others. Let me start off by saying that while his life may have continued in a downward spiral, all we can hope is that he knew Christ. I’ll admit, I’ve had a little trouble trying to “honor” his life for his talent and contribution to music. I have a lot of work to do to become Christ-like in this area, but I have to be honest and say that it is hard to not think about the odd mentality of Michael Jackson (and others like him) and the cases that were brought against him. Please pray for me to look past sins or potential sins of others and love the person as Jesus did and still does.
Thank you for bearing with me, I had to get that out of the way.
Back to the subject of death… while it’s not an easy subject, it certainly is a popular topic. All of us born on this earth will one day experience our last breath. Wouldn’t it be great if we knew when that day was? Imagine being able to circle the date on your calendar, make sure you get the vacations in that you want, say “goodbye” and “I love you” to all those that are close to you. I can even imagine certain movie stars, musicians, and athletes performing a triumphant parade up to the last minutes of their life as a final grand spectacular.
What a gift it would be to know that date, even for those we love around us.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of knowing when, where, or how we will leave this world. So, what can we do? I know people say to live every day like it was your last (which, in a sense is great advice – as far as making sure you hold no grudges, say the “I love you’s”, etc) but I find this advice the same way my instructors’ say to read 200 pages before next class – great advice, just not very practical. You can’t exactly spend your life savings in a day (in my case it would take less than an hour); every single day to make sure everything is perfect for this day. Planning and preparing for the next step in life certainly has to be taken into consideration rather than just living for today.
(Okay… my life savings would probably take closer to 10 minutes to spend – and that includes the drive to the storeK)
So, with all the bad news we see everyday about these modern day iconic figures passing away, just remember that our concern shouldn’t be about death, but rather just trying our best at being practical, being humble, and – my favorite part – thinking about our eternal and heavenly home. Remember that Jesus conquered the grave when he rose from his death on the cross so that we wouldn’t have to suffer in death. All we have to do is cling to him and he will guide us to our eternal home that he is making for us now.
Think about this - with death as common as it is – Christ’s death, or lack thereof, is still being talked about today.

The solution to death is Jesus, and Jesus alone. If you are reading this, and you are not certain about your relationship with Jesus Christ, please go to this website to find more information -

Please let me know how you are being a Servant for our Christ!

Jimmy Kimmel's Response to Vegas

I found this quote while listening to Jimmy Kimmel’s emotional and controversial response to the Las Vegas shooting through teary eyes: “I want this to be a comedy show, I hate talking about stuff like this. I just want to, you know, laugh about things every night, but that seems to be becoming increasingly difficult lately. It feels like someone has opened a window into Hell…” I don’t agree with Kimmel’s political views on gun control (though I am not an impassioned gun enthusiast either), but I am in full agreement with the emotion behind his speech. I also think he might be on to something when suggesting a window has opened to Hell. Day after day, I think of ways that will convince a dying world of it’s need for the salvation offered in Christ alone. Perhaps, if the world is beginning to recognize that a window has been opened, it is time to be a little more straight forward about who Jesus is. It is a little ironic that we refer to Hell as a place where evil comes f...

Your Name - Your Decision

The magnitude of the crucifixion of Jesus has never hit me quite like it has in the last few days. Don’t get me wrong, I know the magnitude of the gift that we have received, but I just didn’t think about it to the fullest. Jesus was arrested the night prior to his execution and that is when his suffering began. People judged him for doing nothing wrong and our punishment was placed on him because he was and still is the only one who lived completely without sin. This has caused me to try to live my life free of sin and live Christ-like. While I still stumble, I know that I am a completely different man than I was or would have been without Christ in my life. Still, I always thought of Jesus dying for everyone at once, and while I knew he died for my sins I didn’t think of him on the cross thinking of me specifically. All that I have done wrong in the eyes of God were in the mind of Jesus when he was on the cross. Imagine Jesus thinking in his head… “Jonathan, you’ve done wrong and now...

Plastic People

People often tell me the reason they have stopped going to church is because the people that go to church are hypocrites. I always try to move on and ignore the obvious hypocritical statement they just made to me about hypocrites, and try to dig deeper into the real reasons why. I have heard countless examples of church people seeming to have it all together, and the possible church newcomers just aren't at that place in their lives yet. They feel unequal and inadequate. They think that we are better people. They feel like church going people are perfect. My family is guilty, ourselves, of making it seem like We always have it all under control every moment we are walking through the sanctuary. No one knows that we woke up 30 minutes before we came in, scrambled around the house to find clean socks, had to get a few bean and cheese tacos on the way in so the kids don't complain of hunger to their Children ministers/ teachers. Then we are in the parking lot trying to unpack ...
