Who is Jesus?

This question is typically an easy one to answer, even for the non-Christian. Or...well, that is what I used to think anyways!

A few nights ago, my wife and I were going through YouTube videos and found some that were filmed by churches or evangelism groups walking the streets asking people: “Who is Jesus?” I was surprised to find out that many people knew of Jesus, but they really had no idea who he really was or what he really did.

Some people were able to give a great answer, and explained that Jesus was the son of God – or God incarnate – who lived a perfect life in order to die for the sins of all mankind. Others spoke of Jesus as being a great teacher, someone who came and just showed people how to love. Still, others talked about how Jesus was really more of an idea of how people should live, and that some people accepted belief in him while others accept belief in some other form of religion or humanism.

The results were extremely mixed, and there was no absolute consensus. I have long been an advocate that the United States of America is a Christian nation, but I find myself questioning that idea. If the vast majority of people don’t even know who Jesus is, then how in the world are we able to claim that this nation is God fearing?

The conversations from the videos may not have been an accurate sample of all of America, but the troubling truth is that as the years pass, we are likely heading in a direction that is away from God and not a country that is seeking his guidance.

So, who is Jesus?

“Christ is exactly like God,
who cannot be seen.
He is the first-born Son,
superior to all creation.
Everything was created by him,
everything in heaven and on earth,
everything seen and unseen,
including all forces and powers,
and all rulers and authorities…
He is the head of his body
which is the church."
-Colossians 1:15-16, 18

Answer?

Jesus is God.

The God of the universe took off his royal robes of Heaven and chose to put on the flesh of man so that he could show us how to live. Is he love? A great idea? A great teacher? A priest? A savior? Righteous? Yes. Yes, Christ is all of the above, he is the reason that we were brought into creation, and his atoning and sacrificial death is the reason that we are able to be called the children of God. He is the reason that we are allotted a spot in heaven. No one deserves that spot except for Jesus, and since he took our place here on earth – we are allowed to take his spot in heaven, all we have to do is put our faith in him.

The best part about it? He wants us to take that spot, so we can dwell with him forever… because that is who Jesus is.

In Christ,

Jon

Your Name - Your Decision

The magnitude of the crucifixion of Jesus has never hit me quite like it has in the last few days. Don’t get me wrong, I know the magnitude of the gift that we have received, but I just didn’t think about it to the fullest. Jesus was arrested the night prior to his execution and that is when his suffering began. People judged him for doing nothing wrong and our punishment was placed on him because he was and still is the only one who lived completely without sin. This has caused me to try to live my life free of sin and live Christ-like. While I still stumble, I know that I am a completely different man than I was or would have been without Christ in my life. Still, I always thought of Jesus dying for everyone at once, and while I knew he died for my sins I didn’t think of him on the cross thinking of me specifically. All that I have done wrong in the eyes of God were in the mind of Jesus when he was on the cross. Imagine Jesus thinking in his head… “Jonathan, you’ve done wrong and now...

Keep Christ in Christmas

I haven't always been a fan of the 'attack on the attack on Christmas' movement over the last few years. Honestly before it was popular, I thought "Happy Holidays" was a great way to express a greeting to someone throughout December. Something, however, has gotten my attention throughout the last few years. Crosses are being removed from public areas, freedom of speech for Christian students and workers has been attacked, secularism of corporate America and the government have grown incredibly, and church attendance has continued to decline. Crime and family depravity are on the rise, horrendous news articles about shootings and child abductions are all too frequent, and even as the most prosperous nation in written history - we have families who are struggling to put food on the table. Society as we know it is in a downward spiral, but must we so quickly and forcefully abandon our faith? I fear for the world that my children will know when they trade in their...

Jimmy Kimmel's Response to Vegas

I found this quote while listening to Jimmy Kimmel’s emotional and controversial response to the Las Vegas shooting through teary eyes: “I want this to be a comedy show, I hate talking about stuff like this. I just want to, you know, laugh about things every night, but that seems to be becoming increasingly difficult lately. It feels like someone has opened a window into Hell…” I don’t agree with Kimmel’s political views on gun control (though I am not an impassioned gun enthusiast either), but I am in full agreement with the emotion behind his speech. I also think he might be on to something when suggesting a window has opened to Hell. Day after day, I think of ways that will convince a dying world of it’s need for the salvation offered in Christ alone. Perhaps, if the world is beginning to recognize that a window has been opened, it is time to be a little more straight forward about who Jesus is. It is a little ironic that we refer to Hell as a place where evil comes f...
